Cwmcarn Forest Drive is home to some of South Wales’ most celebrated mountain bike trails. The Twrch trail, a 17km red-graded singletrack loop, has been voted one of the best trail centre routes in the UK, while the newer trails at Cwmcarn continue to push the boundaries of trail design.

Located near the village of Abercarn in the Ebbw Valley, Cwmcarn is approximately 30 minutes from our base at Pontiscill. We offer bike delivery to the trail centre, making it easy to ride some of the best trails in the valleys without owning a bike.

Twrch Trail

Red · 17km

One of the UK's best red-graded trails. 17km of flowing singletrack through the forest with relentless climbs and rewarding descents.

DH Trails

Black · Various

Technical downhill trails for experienced riders. Steep, rooty, and rocky - Cwmcarn's DH trails are not for the faint-hearted.

Pedalhounds

Blue · 11km

Family-friendly loops through the lower forest. Flowing singletrack with moderate climbs, ideal for building confidence.

Getting Here

How to Get to Cwmcarn

  • From Gethin MTB (~30 mins)

    Head south on the A470 from Merthyr Tydfil, join the A472 through Crumlin and follow signs to Cwmcarn Forest Drive. We can deliver bikes if you prefer.

  • From Cardiff (~25 mins)

    Take the M4 west to Junction 28, then the A467 north through Risca. Cwmcarn Forest Drive is signposted from the A467.

  • Parking

    Pay and display car park at the Cwmcarn Forest Drive entrance (NP11 7FA). The car park can fill up on busy weekends - arrive early for the best spaces.

The Twrch trail is red-graded and best suited to riders with some off-road experience. If you're new to mountain biking, the Pedalhounds blue trail is a much better starting point. It offers flowing singletrack at a more manageable pace.

Cwmcarn has excellent facilities including a café, bike wash station, toilets, and a large pay-and-display car park. There's also a visitor centre with trail maps and local information.
